I have fallen for sunburst mirrors! This was the first, from 1stdibs.com
These have proven to be very expensive, which I'm not so much in love with. I really am not a fan of the modern versions but we have found these two, the first from Ballards, the second from Horchow:

When we found the distressed silver, I thought perfect... In the original "inspiration" pic for the living room there is a rustic grey wood mirror:
But once I found this antiqued gold leaf finish I fell in love!
The most important part to figure out leads us to the title of this entry... How big is too big!? These mirrors are 45 inches in diameter! Huge! I hung a piece of brown kraft paper approximately the same size above our fireplace to see if it could work:
We will be removing the tile and the mantle that are surrounding the fireplace right now and replacing it with new drywall and possibly a shelf (hearth) below the fireplace. Are these big mirrors too big? Or just big enough?? Here is another look:
This leads me to believe it might be okay... Without anything on the rest of this portion of the wall, it may be just enough... the last consideration is will it be too much with the book shelves surrounding it? To the left there will be a small row of shelves and an over door shelf (not pictured) like the first pic. To the right will be longer shelves without a top shelf like pictured. There will be molding that comes down the wall to the top of the door frame, not as far as in these pics. (These images are from dominomag.com)

Here is a pic of a big one and it looks good:

Katie,
ReplyDeleteLove the scale and the idea of a big sunburst mirror. Make sure you decide on a paint color before choosing the finish on the mirror since it will be mounted on that color. If you go a little yellow, you might find that you like the contrast of the silver, and/or the gold might be too matched in tone. In other words, it might not pop the way you want it to. If the tone of the paint is warm, I would contrast the mirror off of it-- if it is greyer, go gold with the mirror-- just mho
definitely! Thanks! We are still trying to decide on paint... I decided to give it a break for a bit. I think we are going to put up some grey paints by the yellow, so once we decide, we'll figure out the mirror.
ReplyDeleteOooh! I love the scale of the big sunburst! If the mirror goes above the fireplace it'll definitely be a focal point of the room. Nobody wants a small focal point. Go big or go home!
